Arise Ghana asked to demonstrate under new modalities.

Arise Ghana, a pressure group has been directed by an Accra High Court to carry out their planned demonstration between the hours of 8am to 4pm. The demonstration scheduled for Tuesday has again been directed by the court to commence from Obra Spot and end at the independence square.

The demonstrators initially wanted to pitch camp at the Presidency for two days as part of the demonstration.

The Ghana Police filed a case in court seeking to halt the two-day demonstration stating reasons why the demonstration could not be held in the evening. The service in court further stated the timing of the protest by Arise Ghana also had the potential to affect effective policing. They also cited the recent theorists attacks in the Sub-Region as a matter of concern.

On their part the group however expressed shock at the turn of events since the police came into an agreement earlier on the modalities of the demonstration. Lawyer for Arise Ghana argued that granting the police their ask will empower the Police to use such processes on future citizens hoping to protest.

After a few adjournments of the case in court on Monday to allow the police study arguments by the protestors why the demonstration must come on, the court presided by Justice Comfort Tasiame ruled that new routes be taken. Starting at the Obra spot, the protest will terminate at the independence square here in Accra.

The Ghana Police has however assured demonstrators of the necessary protection in line with the court’s ruling.
