Inspector General of Police

Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare hours after addressing the Ghana Police Service concerns on the British High Commissioner, H.E. Harriet Thompson’s tweet on the arrest of Oliver Barker-Vormawor has caught the attention of Ghanaian lawmaker, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The Member of Parliament For North Tongu and Ranking Member, Committee on Foreign Affairs says the Inspector General Police should have used Ghana’s Foreign Minister as a conduit to address issues of concern in the tweet. “Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare should have raised his concerns about the British High Commissioner’s tweet on Oliver Barker-Vormawor’s latest arrest with Ghana’s Foreign Minister for it to be addressed through the time-tested diplomatic channels”.

The M.P continued that due to the strong cordial bialateral relations between Ghana and U.K, a diplomatic, official communication channel should have been employed in order not to create an adversary impression.

“The IGP’s rather ill-advised attack on the British High Commissioner, H.E. Harriet Thompson for being meddlesome in Ghana’s internal affairs appears rather far-fetched, particularly considering the significant fact that the activist of interest is a student in the UK, and that matters of human rights are universal and cardinal” the M.P took to social media to write.

The above comes on the back of the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s four paged statement in response to a tweet made by UK’s High Commissioner to Ghana on the arrest of FixTheCountry convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

The Member of Parliament For North Tongu and Ranking Member, Committee on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has advised the Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to look into the issue. “I shall respectfully, however, urge Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to urgently intervene with the objective of de-escalation and restoring our traditionally friendly Ghana-UK climate”.
